The legendary fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez was born in Utado, Puerto Rico on February 11th 1943, but at age 7 he and his family migrated to New York.He was an alumnus of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology; upon graduation he became a star/celebrity of the fashion world via his overtly stylised, flamboyant, dynamic and ever-changing style of fashion illustration which shook-up and re-energised a genre which had become somewhat jaded.Feted by fashion designers and magazine editors alike, he rose to the very top of his profession in an international career that spanned three decades and which would take him to Paris, Tokyo, Kyoto, Milan, Sydney and Melbourne. In the early 1960’s he was a much-in-demand freelancer for top fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Andy Warhol’s  ‘Interview’ (for which he produced attention-grabbing portraits of famed supermodels Jerry Hall, Jessica Lange and Grace Jones). In the 1960’s he was mentored by the celebrated British couturier Charles James (after their chance meeting  in a New York restaurant & Antonio’s bold introduction); their collaboration would last for more than ten years.Charles James’ influence over Antonio’s  drawings (by way of a new-found appreciation for the sculptural aspect of garments) was immense, informing and altering  his approach to fashion illustration with a long-lasting effect. One of the major benefits/fruits of their association was the illustrated documenting by Antonio Lopez of every garment James had designed in  a highly-auspicious career.Antonio’s bold and colourful advertising artwork for such stellar design houses/companies as Missoni and Versace  during the 1980’s will especially be remembered by fashion students of the era, including me; a small selection of which are included in the gallery below.
