SENIOR PROM – VINTAGE STYLE!

Written by  on August 14, 2014

The Prom (short for Promenade) has always been a rich and major part of American high school culture and it has now extended to the United Kingdom and Canada, also. The event is  a semi-formal Black-Tie dance typically held near the end of a student’s senior year (their last year of high school). It is a major affair for all those who attend –  the highlight of the school calendar, a starry and magical event which requires enormous planning and thought in its preparation.High school juniors attending may call it “junior prom” whilst high school seniors refer to it as “senior prom”; in reality the event may turn out to be a combined junior/senior dance. At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King may be on show, elected by their fellow alumini in a school-wide vote prior to the prom.Prom night is a memory to be treasured across the generations (along with high school yearbooks) and I present here a selection of wonderful images from 1950’s and 1960’s prom nights. When I look at these joyful pictures, they evoke for me a wonderful celebration of youth, which is fleeting – yet timeless.Enjoy!

GEORGES BARBIER: REFLECTIONS OF ART DECO

Written by  on August 12, 2014

1

He indulged in fantasy, opulence, erotica, whimsy and elitism;  the universe he inhabited was a rarified one,  blessed with privilege which ultimately defined and coloured his art.I present for your consideration a second gallery  of the colourful, sophisticated and exotic illustrations of famed Art Deco artist Georges Barbier.

It’s the cry every mother hears: “Mummy I want!…” and none more so than when the seasonal toy catalogues appear; whether yester-year or yesterday, some things never change.Although I am a tad early, you will forgive me whilst I indulge in some delightful pages from my childhood and no doubt,  from some of yours, too!

TOM FORD MENSWEAR RTW FALL-WINTER 2014/15

Written by  on August 9, 2014

Tom Ford1

Tom Ford’s Fall-Winter RTW Menswear may feature a more casual/sportive silhouette /influence than in previous seasons, but the die-hard sartorial glamour for which he is known and created his brand from is still very much to the fore.Cold-weather outerwear highlighted with extravagant fur confirm my observation/assessment, and last, but  not least the strikingly dandy/dapper evening tux’s – as full of flash and bravado as ever!
