GERRY ANDERSON RETROSPECTIVE CATALOGUE: CITY OF EDINBURGH ART CENTRE 1986

Written by  on December 15, 2013

Gerry Anderson was the genius behind the legendary animated puppet show/series ‘Thunderbirds’ (amongst many others!) which debuted on British television in Septmber 1965; I remember it well and especially the ‘Fireflash’ aircraft in premier-season episode: ‘Trapped In the Sky’, because I was a ‘first generation’ Anderson kid, catching all of his fabulous shows the first time they were transmitted – apart from ‘Twizzle’ – which was the company’s debut offering in the genre, premiering in 1956.The earliest Anderson show I watched as a tiny tot was his western adventure ‘Four Feather Falls’ in 1958, with Sheriff Tex Tucker and the little native American boy he saved/rescued –  Makooya  (I caught repeats of Twizzle’ later on).The world of Gerry Anderson is a major area for researchers to cover/report on and this entry is merely a small introduction/overview to his classic puppet show of the 1950’s and ’60’s courtesy of a catalogue produced for an exhibition of Anderson memorabilia at the City of Edinburgh Art Centre in Spring 1986 which gives  a brief outline/character-bio to each of his legendary shows in that era.The exhibition (and indeed, the catalogue itself)  covered Anderson’s career in its entireity, right up through his live-action shows and the puppet-vehicle ‘Terrahawks’, but this blog entry focues on the  classic shows of my childhood.Children of my generation were truly lucky/blessed to have grown up in an era which produced some of the most iconic and enduring childrens television ever made and the work of both Gerry and Sylvia Anderson has had a richly-profound influence on my chosen paths in life.Look for more Anderson entries in future blog offerings, in the meantime – enjoy!

WE HAD GLAMOUR THEN…

Written by  on December 13, 2013

What better season to show off some fabulous vintage couture fashion editorials from the 1950’s, than this festive one! The pictures here feature some of the top supermodels of the era, including Suzy Parker, Sunny Harnett and Dovima. These models were the living epoitome of  ‘GLAMOUR’! They lived, eat and breathed an incredibly aspirational, yet detached lifestyle – to a degree that some may find hard to comprehend today.Clad in the finest couturier gowns from top Parisian houses of the day and snapped by legendary photographers such as Richard Avedon against an exotic backdrop of Parisian nightlife, these editorials set a dauntingly-high benchmark of style and perfection for all those that followed.
