‘THE GREEN HORNET’: VAN WILLIAMS & BRUCE LEE

Back in the day, life was much simpler, especially with regard to media – fact. There was no satellite or cable tv, no computers for general use, no mobile phones, tablets, etc etc yet it was a FABULOUS time to grow up in! The 1960’s was also an incredible time for television (which was really still in its ‘salad days’), with so many wonderful shows and stars/characters emerging. Some  (both shows and actors/actresses) would go on to become icons of their genre, their time and even the country their show represented/originated from.At the beginning of 1960 there were only two tv channels in the United Kingdom – BBC1 (which had originally launched on August 22nd, 1932) and ITV, or as it was known in the London area – Associated Rediffusion (weekdays) and ABC (London weekend) which launched in the London area on September 22nd 1955; on April 20th 1964, BBC2 started broadcasting and a long gap followed before Channel 4 launched (to breathless anticipation) on November 2nd, 1982, signalling the birth of multi-channel options in the Uk just ahead of  the satellite explosion of the 1990s, with its almost limitless choice. This series will feature retro tv shows mainly from the 1960s and 1970s; it is not comprehensive by any means – rather it is an  exercise in fun and nostalgia for this particular retro-hound! Some of you may remember them fondly or with a groan, some of you may not recall them at all, or not even been born when the shows first aired. For that reason (and identification purposes) I have added titles to accompany the pics. For my first installment, I begin with the cult American 1960s tv show  ‘The Green Hornet” starring Van Williams as the title character, along with a very young Bruce Lee as his sidekick ‘Kato’.I also feature some rare pics of one of television’s  first major heart-throbs – ‘Dr. Kildare’ played by Richard Chamberlain; these are just some of the shows we ran home from school to watch way-back-when – and oh, the bliss of the long, glorious summer holidays when one could stay up late, watch tv and not have to worry about getting up for school the next day.Enoy!
